How to Train Your Dog to Lie Down
The “down” command encourages calm behaviour, self-control, and focus — making it one of the most valuable skills your dog can learn.
Teaching your dog to lie down goes beyond obedience. It helps them relax, settle in busy environments, and remain calm around distractions.
This command builds naturally on “sit”, so if your dog already knows how to sit, you’re off to a great start.
Step-by-Step: Teaching “Down”
1. Start from a Sit
Ask your dog to sit first. This gives you a stable starting position and makes the transition to lying down much easier.
2. Lower the Treat
Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose, then slowly lower it straight down toward the floor and slightly forward.
3. Guide Them Into Position
As your dog follows the treat, their elbows should touch the ground and their body should naturally lower into a lying position.
4. Say the Command
The moment your dog is fully lying down, calmly say “Down” and reward immediately with the treat and praise.
5. Repeat in Short Sessions
Practice a few repetitions at a time. Keep sessions short, positive, and relaxed to avoid frustration.
6. Increase Duration
Once your dog understands the command, wait a second or two before rewarding. Gradually build longer, calm stays in the down position.
Trainer Tips
- Train on a non-slip surface for comfort and confidence.
- Lower the treat slowly — rushing often causes confusion.
- Reward calm behaviour, not speed.
- If your dog stands up, reset calmly and try again.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Pushing your dog down physically.
- Repeating “down” before your dog understands it.
- Training when your dog is overly excited.
- Skipping rewards too quickly.
The “down” command takes patience, but once learned, it becomes one of the most useful calming tools you have.
Mastering this skill sets your dog up perfectly for commands like stay, settle, and place — all built on calm control.
